Hello there

My name is Uma Vaidyanathan and I run Bytes of Life Photography & Creative. I am a Washington DC-based photographer. I shoot a wide range of topics, but my style is focused on clean composition and authentic depictions of my subjects. I endeavor to bring a creative angle to my work to make it pop and go beyond just a photograph.

My Story

I am a self taught photographer. My instruments of choice are the iPhone and Ricoh GR III - both known for their excellence and discreetness. I have worked as a freelance photographer since 2020 in event, street, and portrait photography. My work has been featured multiple times by several bloggers and Instagram accounts such as the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum of Modern Art, Mobiography, Popville, and the official IGDC account among others.

My route to photography was an unusual one. With a PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience, my origin story and training started in a very different arena. However, my background in studying and working with people in various settings, exploring what makes them happy, sad, and everything in between, is also the same thing that sparked my passion for photography -- where I try to capture the essence and emotion of a scene or person, and especially, joy. As the famous Ansel Adam quote goes, I make photographs for and with clients, not just take them.

While photography is the core of my passion, I am constantly looking for ways to make it come alive further beyond the camera. In recent years, I have enjoyed pushing boundaries with it using methods such photoembroidery (sewing on photos I take with needle and thread) and photo weaving (weaving photos together like cloth). This work has won prizes such as the DC State Fair prize for fiber art.

I have also been fortunate enough to have my work acknowledged in international competitions such as the Mira Mobile Prize and the Mobile Photography Awards. I have also had my work featured by Mobiography Magazine and the Washingtonian Magazine.

Feel free to drop a note below if you are interested in my services or if you just want to say hello.
